Urban Texture: Finding Art in Rust, Cracks, and Chipped Paint
Most people move through a city with their eyes on the destination. I’m doing the opposite, slowing down to photograph what usually gets ignored.
Urban Texture is my personal photo project built around the surfaces and details that quietly carry the history of a place: rusty metal, chipping paint, cracked concrete, layered posters, weathered brick, worn tools and fixtures, faded signage, grime, scratches, dents, and the accidental patterns created by time. These aren’t “pretty” in the traditional sense—yet they’re full of character, mood, and design.
This project is about turning the overlooked into something worth stopping for… and eventually, something worth hanging on a wall.
What I’m Photographing
If you’re following along, here’s the kind of subject matter you’ll see from this series:
- Rust + oxidation on rails, bolts, doors, gates, and industrial objects
- Peeling paint and chipped layers that reveal color beneath color
- Cracked sidewalks and broken concrete with strong lines and shapes
- Old brick walls with stains, patches, and repairs that create natural patterns
- Faded signs and typography letters disappearing, paint worn thin
- Graffiti layers where multiple eras of marks overlap
- Reflections in glass and puddles that distort the scene into something abstract
- Textures with repetition (grates, fences, corrugated metal, rivets, tile)
Sometimes I’ll shoot wide to show the context, but a lot of this project lives in the details—tight compositions that feel more like abstract art than street photography.
Why I’m Doing This
I’ve photographed plenty of “obvious” moments in my work, action, people, events. This project is different. It’s personal and slower on purpose.
Urban Texture is a way to:
- train my eye to notice light, shape, and pattern faster
- create images that work as standalone art prints
- build a cohesive body of work I can grow over time
Cities are constantly changing, but the wear marks are the evidence of what came before. That’s what I want to preserve.
The Process Behind Each Image
For each shoot, I’m hunting for a few specific things:
1) Light + shadow
Hard side light brings texture to life: every scratch and bump becomes a story.
2) Layers
Peeling paint, posters, patched repairs, anything that shows time stacked on top of time.
3) Strong composition
Even when the subject is chaotic, the frame has to feel intentional: clean lines, balance, tension, rhythm.
4) Color vs. black & white decisions
Some scenes live in color (faded blues, rust oranges, old signage). Others hit harder in black & white where texture becomes the subject.
I’ll share behind-the-scenes, selects, and edits as the series develops so you can watch the project take shape from idea to final print.
Where This Is Going
The end goal is a curated collection and when it’s ready, I’ll release a limited-edition print drop featuring the strongest images from the series.
Some pieces will be bold and graphic. Others will be subtle and quiet. All of them will be built from the same idea: the simplest surfaces can become art when you really look.
